How Often to Rotate Your Tires

Rotating your tires is one of the cheapest, highest-return things you can do for your car. Do it on schedule and you'll get thousands more miles out of every set. Last updated: June 2026 · 7 min read.

How Often Should You Rotate Tires?

The standard recommendation is every 5,000 to 8,000 miles — which lines up with most oil change intervals, so many people just do both at once. A simple rule: rotate every other oil change at minimum, every oil change to be thorough. Always check your owner's manual first; if you tow, drive rough roads, or notice the fronts wearing faster, rotate on the shorter end of that range.

Why Tire Rotation Matters

Tires don't wear evenly. The front tires handle steering, braking, and (on FWD cars) putting power down, so they wear faster than the rears. Left unrotated, you end up with two bald front tires while the rears still have plenty of tread.

  • Longer tire life — even wear means all four reach the end together; up to 20% more mileage from a set
  • Better grip and safety — uneven tread reduces traction in rain and snow and makes handling unpredictable
  • Smoother, quieter ride — cupped or unevenly worn tires create vibration and road noise
  • Warranty protection — many tire warranties require documented rotations to stay valid

The Right Rotation Pattern for Your Drivetrain

  • Front-wheel drive (FWD) — fronts move straight back; rears cross forward (rear-left to front-right, rear-right to front-left)
  • Rear-wheel drive (RWD) — rears move straight forward; fronts cross to the rear
  • All-wheel drive (AWD) — cross all four in an X pattern; AWD is especially sensitive to uneven tread
  • Directional or staggered tires — directional tires only swap front-to-back on the same side; staggered setups often can't be rotated at all

What It Costs (and When It's Free)

A standalone tire rotation typically costs $20 to $50 at a shop, and it's often bundled free with an oil change. Many tire retailers include free lifetime rotations when you buy a set from them. With a jack, stands, and a torque wrench it's a straightforward DIY job in under an hour — and the perfect time to check tread depth, inspect for uneven wear, and confirm tire pressure.
